THE CURRICULUM
Southside Christian Academy uses the Abeka Curriculum to teach our students in various subjects.
All students are taught Bible. Other subjects vary by the grade in which your child is enrolled, but may include
Phonics, Reading, Language, Spelling, Arithmetic, Penmanship, History, Science, Health, and Art.

KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM
The Abeka Kindergarten Curriculum helps your child's inquisitive mind to blossom even more through Bible-enriched, fun-filled activities and games and lessons. Your child will not only realize that learning is fun, but will also gain a wealth of knowledge to help them on their path to learning to success.
FIRST GRADE CURRICULUM
The Abeka First Grade Curriculum gently guides your child on their learning path to success with key Scriptures from God's Word. Through fun-filled lessons and activities, fundamental phonics and reading concepts as well as fundamental arithmetic skills will be reinforced with your child to help them develop healthy learning patterns.
SECOND GRADE CURRICULUM
The Abeka Second Grade Curriculum encourages your child to continue on their learning path while sharpening their fundamental phonics and reading skills, writing skills, and arithmetic skills (including multiplication). This curriculum is also designed to spark your child's curiosity about God's creation through lessons, stories, and key Bible verses.
THIRD GRADE CURRICULUM
The Abeka Third Grade Curriculum encourages your child to explore the "who, what, when, where, why, and how" behind fundamental concepts and skills, as they progress on the path to mastering those skills with the help of key Scriptures from God's Word.
FORTH GRADE CURRICULUM
The Abeka Fourth Grade Curriculum encourages your child to dig even deeper in their studies to better understand the "who, what, when, where, why, and how" behind each concept in their lessons / assignments. This curriculum equips your child with the tools to master new and foundational concepts, all while being encouraged with Scriptures from God's Word.
FIFTH GRADE CURRICULUM
The Abeka Fifth Grade Curriculum encourages your child to increase their critical thinking skills and connect concepts across subjects, emphasizing key Scriptures from God's Word throughout each lesson / assignment.
THE GRADING SCALE
Southside Christian Academy uses the following grading scale for assignments, quizzes, and tests that are administered from the curriculum.
A+ 100
A 99-95
A- 94
B+ 93
B 92-86
B- 85
C+ 84
C 83-76
C- 75
D+ 74
D 73-71
D- 70
F 69-0
STANDARDIZED TESTING
For standardized testing, Southside Christian Academy uses the Iowa Skills Test to assess each student's achievement in various subjects.
Standardized testing is administered in the spring.
